Biology: Wonderful Water Properties!

Picture
Thanks to the water molecules' polar nature, water droplets bead up on  plants and other objects. Thanks to adhesion, plants are able to "absorb" water in the roots and move it up the stem through capillary action. The water "bead" on the leaf, is an perfect example of water molecules "sticking" together, displaying cohesion.
Picture
Another property of water is that it expands as it freezes! As a result, the solid form of water (ice) floats on the liquid form of water. Thanks to this property, animals like polar bears, use floating ice as platforms for hunting. Also, this property is responsible for allowing animals to survive under a frozen lake bed!
Picture
Water is considered the universal solvent. Its polar nature allows it to be a fantastic solvent, dissolving all kinds of substances. Thanks to water's polarity, our pool water is able to easily dissolve chlorine and algaecide to keep bacteria and other microorganisms from thriving in that environment.
